Soup is one of my favorite meals to make in the colder months. When my kids ask me what we’re having for dinner and the answer is soup, they always want to know if I made bread. It’s just a fact, soup and bread go together. This is where my bread machine comes in. You add the ingredients, it makes the dough, I make the rolls and bake it in the oven. Can you smell that already? Anyway, I like to use pretty towels to line the bread basket. That’s why I came up with this easy bread basket liner. I know this is technically not a quilt, but I wanted to share this tutorial with you. I used nine different fabric squares, pieced them together, added the pom-pom trim and backing fabric. You can really play around with colors and trimming or even use old fabric napkins to create an upcycled bread basket liner. You can use larger or smaller fabric squares according to the size of your basket. What you will need: Nine 5x5” (12.7x12.7cm) matching fabric squares 60” (152cm) Pom pom trim fringe (optional) 14.5x14.5” (37x37cm) backing fabric Matching thread Step 1 Arrange fabric squares in rows of three to form a large square until you are happy with the look. Step 2 Sew them together using a quarter inch (6mm) seam allowance one row at a time. Press seams open. Step 3 Sew all three rows together, making sure that the seams are matching up. Press open. Step 4 Once you finished the top of the liner, you can add the trim if so inclined. Pin the trim to the right side all along the edges. Sew in place using a zipper foot. (I use a zipper foot, since it is easier to get around the pom pom balls). Step 5 Pin the backing fabric to the top, right sides together. Using a seam allowances of about a quarter inch (6mm), sew while still using the zipper foot, around the edges. Leave an opening of about 2 inches (5cm) on one side to turn right sides out. Be careful not to catch the pom pom balls while sewing. Make sure that the webbing of the trim is not visible on the outside. Step 6 Once you have completed this, trim a little bit of each corner to lessen the bulk. Turn right sides out and press flat. Hand sew the opening closed. Step 7 Using your regular sewing foot, top stitch through both layers to finish the bread liner. I stitched on both sides of all seam lines to give it a professional finish. Step 8
All you have left now is to line your basket and fill it with fresh, warm rolls!
